Coconut Oil and Alzheimer's

Jenni Madison - Thursday, May 17, 2012

How worried should drug companies be about supplements eating into their monopoly and profits?

Alot, as this story will show. Please share it with anyone you know who is suffering from Alzheimers or is worried about it.

Of course, just about everyone worries about Alzheimer's. It currently afflicts 5.2 million people in the US and is the seventh leading cause of
death. The cost of treating it is estimated at $148 billion.

Mary Newport, MD, has been medical director of the neonatal intensive care
unit at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Florida since it opened in 2003.
About the same time the unit opened, her husband Steve, then 53, began
showing signs of progressive dementia, later diagnosed as Alzheimer's
Disease. Many days, often for several days in a row, he was in a fog;
couldn't find a spoon or remember how to get water out of the refrigerator,
she said.

They started him on Alzheimer's drugs--Aricept, Namenda, Exelon--but his
disease worsened steadily. (It should be noted that the latest research
shows that the various Alzheimer's drugs, like Aricept, have proven
disappointing, with little real benefit and often distressing side
effects.)

When Dr. Newport couldn't get her husband into a drug trial for a new
Alzheimer's medication, she started researching the mechanism behind
Alzheimer's. She discovered that with Alzheimer's disease, certain brain
cells may have difficulty utilizing glucose (made from the carbohydrates we
eat), the brain's principal source of energy. Without fuel, these precious
neurons may begin to die. There is an alternative energy source for brain
cell fats known as ketones. If deprived of carbohydrates, the body produces
ketones naturally.

But this is the hard way to do it; who wants to cut carbohydrates out of
the diet completely? Another way to produce ketones is by consuming oils
that have medium-chain triglycerides. When MCT oil is digested, the liver
converts it into ketones. In the first few weeks of life, ketones provide
about 25 percent of the energy newborn babies need to survive.

Dr. Newport learned that the ingredient in the drug trial which was showing
so much promise was simply MCT oil derived from coconut oil or palm kernel
oil, and that a dose of 20 grams (about 20 ml or 4 teaspoons) was used to
produce these results. When MCT oil is metabolized, the ketones which the
body creates may, according to the latest research, not only protect
against the incidence of Alzheimer s, but may actually reverse it.

Moreover, this is also a potential treatment for Parkinson's disease,
Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
(ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), drug-resistant epilepsy, brittle type I
diabetes, and type II (insulin-resistant) diabetes.

So Mr. Newport, not being able to get into the drug trial, started taking
the coconut oil twice a day. At this point, he could barely remember how to
draw a clock. Two weeks after adding coconut oil to his diet, his drawing
improved. After 37 days, Steve's drawing gained even more clarity. The oil
seemed to lift the fog, and in the first sixty days, Dr. Newport saw
remarkable changes in him: every morning he was alert and happy, talkative,
making jokes. His gait was still a little weird, but his tremor was no
longer very noticeable. He was able to concentrate on things that he wanted
to do around the house and in the yard and stay on task, whereas before
coconut oil he was easily distracted and rarely accomplished anything
unless he was directly supervised.

Over the next year, the dementia continued to reverse itself: he is able to
run again, his reading comprehension has improved dramatically, and his
short-term memory is improving; he often brings up events that happened
days to weeks earlier and relays telephone conversations with accurate
detail. A recent MRI shows that the brain atrophy has been completely
halted.

Let's take a moment to consider what actually happened here. Synthetic
(patentable) Alzheimer's drugs have failed. A drug company reluctantly
decides to put a non-patentable natural substance (medium-chain
triglycerides derived from coconut or palm) through an FDA trial. It works.
But, darn it, a smart doctor figures out that a natural food can be
substituted for the super-expensive drug. Not only that, the ketones from
natural coconut oil last in the body longer than the drug version--eight
hours instead of three hours. This is enough to make a drug company start
worrying about its future. What if this natural health idea really catches
on? Goodbye to monopoly profits!

Coconut oil can be found in many health food stores and even some grocery
stores. It is important to use coconut oil that is non-hydrogenated and contains no
trans-fat. We would also strongly encourage the use of virgin oil
(chemicals used to extract non-virgin oil are potentially dangerous, and
better still, virgin organic, still quite reasonably priced.)

For more information, see Dr. Newport's website. Sadly, you will not find
any information on ketones, or the use of coconut oil or MCT oil, on the
Alzheimer's Association website.

Coconut oil is not the only natural product that has the potential to turn Alzheimer's around.

We cover some more of this, and drug companies efforts to steel them in a future issue.

Is Coconut Oil Safe To Use During Pregnancy?

Jenni Madison - Monday, April 16, 2012

We all want to have a happy and healthy pregnancy. And we all want to know that we aregiving our body and our babies the best possible nourishment during and after our pregnancy. Coconut oil has some remarkable benefits when it comes to pregnancy for both health and beauty, which is why it is known as the ‘Breast Milk of Mother Nature’.

Outside of mother's milk, pure coconut oil is nature's most plentiful source of lauric acid. That’s right. Nature still has a few miracles up her sleeve!

You've probably heard that breast milk is jam-packed with nutrients and disease-fighting ingredients that help keep babies healthy.

Well, incredibly, coconut oil contains one of the same compounds -- lauric acid -- found in mother's milk. And lauric acid is the predominant type of MCFA found in coconut oil.

Fortunately for our health, lauric acid in both breast milk and coconut oil transforms when consumed into a substance called monolaurin, the actual compound responsible for helping to strengthen the immune system.

Many skeptical scientists proceeded to test this like crazy. In fact, a great volume of research has now been done establishing the ability of lauric acid to enhance immunity.

What researchers found was that this medium-chain fatty acid derivative actually disrupts the lipid (or fatty) membranes of the offending organisms.

The lauric acid in coconut oil is a natural and effortless way to help strengthen your and your baby’s immune system. Benefits of coconut oil during and after pregnancy include;

Lactation

Coconut oil stimulates metabolism promoting both healthy thyroid and lactation. Intake of coconut oil while pregnant may help ensure that a mother will have lots of milk. Studies have proven that milk in breastfeeding mothers who takes coconut oil and other coconut products has higher amount of lauric acid.

Stretch Marks

Because of the high amount of vitamin E in coconut oil, pregnant women in South India apply the coconut extract on their bellies to prevent stretch marks. Even existing stretch marks have a chance to fade with regular use of coconut oil. It will also moisturize the skin and keep skin irritation and infection at bay.

Infant Health

Coconut oil helps develop the immune system of the newborn as well as aid in the brain and bone development. It is known to relieve diaper rash, Keratosis Pilaris and is so gentle and beneficial for baby’s digestive health it is actually used by hospitals in infant formula.

Infant Massage

Coconut oil is popular for infant massage, and has been known to calm babies and help them sleep.

Pregnancy can be a stressful time, and pregnant women have an increased demand for good nutrition. The unborn child also demands ample nutrients for proper development and growth and will steal them from the mother’s body if they are not supplied in her diet.

Pure virgin coconut oil is more than safe to use during pregnancy. It offers the nutritional benefits of MCFAs and the immune strengthening properties of Lauric acid.

For generations people living in the coconut growing regions of the world have relied on coconut for nature’s nourishment and health. So is coconut oil safe to use during pregnancy? The answer is a loud YES.

Coconut Oil As A Detox

Jenni Madison - Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Simply being alive in the normality of our environment can create imbalances within our bodies. Thefood we eat, the toxins in the air we breathe, the stress of achievement, the emotional response to loss and change ~ is all a part of life. This lifestyle, plus how you take care of yourself can have an enormous impact on your health.

Your body needs to cleanse and heal so to return itself to perfect health. By making conscious health choices you can trust and further assist your body's natural healing process.

There are many natural substances that can aid in cleansing excess toxins from the body. Coconut oil is one of these. I often hear people say that when they begin using coconut oil daily they experience some cleansing reactions. For example, if your body has any type of yeast infection or Candida, coconut oil when ingested will start fighting these bad bacteria and this can create feelings of nausea or runny stools.

According to Dr Bruce Fife, from his book Coconut Cures. Here are the reasons why;

1. MCFAs in coconut oil kill disease causing bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

2. These microorganisms not only cause infection but also often produce toxic byproducts that are carcinogenic or poisonous.

3.  Coconut oil is chemically very stable so it functions as an antioxidant protecting against destructive free radicals that are often generated by toxins.

4. MCFAs in coconut oil are used by the body as a source of fuel to stimulate metabolism. As metabolism increases so does the body’s natural mechanisms of detoxification, repair, and growth. Even the immune system is shifted to a higher level of efficiency.

Coconut oil neutralizes the effects of many harmful toxins including the deadly aflatoxin.

The Coconut Cleanse is a program of using Coconut Oil, Acai Berry Powder and Barley Spirulina as a full body cleanse . It is a 21-day process that works with three important areas for returning your body to a healthy cleansed balance. These three areas include;

Detoxification: removing and eliminating toxins from the body.

PH acid/alkaline balance: create a healthy PH balance.

Antioxidant: oxygenating the cells and dispelling harmful, damaging free radicals.

Coconut oil and the super foods mentioned above offer a powerful combination of the above three areas.

Coconut oil is cleansing and nourishing with natural antiviral, anti fungal, and antibacterial properties.

Green powders are rich in chlorophyll acting as a potent detox for the blood and cells, alkalising the body's system. Deep purple berry, Acai' powder from the Amazon is super rich in vitamins, minerals and essential omega 3's, 6 and oleic fatty acids, making it a powerful antioxidant.

The Coconut Cleanse is an overall body harmoniser, balancer and cleanser. You will learn how to make super food smoothies, how amazing coconut oil is for health and healing, and how to use it in a way that will maximise its incredible health and beauty benefits.

As your body returns to it's natural state of balance you will then be able to listen to your own intuitive voice that will guide you on your own personal radiant health and healing journey.

Eating For Beauty

Jenni Madison - Wednesday, March 07, 2012

Beauty is dependent on the overall health of your body. In order for your skin to look attractive and vibrant you need to make healthy lifestyle choices. A good place to start is with the foods you eat.

Free radicals are toxic byproducts that can have the most harmful affect on your health, beauty and longevity. Especially found in heated, rancid and unsaturated oils, free radicals can damage proteins, fats, cell membranes, and vital DNA. They can also help accelerate the ageing process.

Coconut oil is a saturated fat that is made up of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA’s). The MCFA’s in coconut oil possess incredible health giving properties. They provide natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, ant-viral and detox benefits. Coconut oil is cleansing, nourishing and helps with the body’s absorption of vitamin E and omega 3’s, which further enhances its beautifying effects.

Coconut oil reverses the free radical tissue-damaging process by displacing the rancid oils from the tissues and providing fat-soluble vitamins, minerals and super nutrition factors directly to the damaged tissue.

Eating coconut oil, and other raw, whole and super foods that cleanse and nourish your body can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, hair, nails and eyes.

In his book The Coconut Oil Miracle, Bruce Fife, ND, details: “Studies show that dry skin contains a higher content of unsaturated fatty acids (60%) compared to normal skin (49%). The best oil to use is one that doesn’t create free radicals. Saturated fat fits that requirement.”

The health and beauty benefits of coconut oil are effective when used both internally and externally. What you apply to your skin is deeply absorbed by your body; so if you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.

If you are one of the millions of people worldwide that spend money on vitamins and lotions in an attempt to look and feel better, then it only makes sense to incorporate organic virgin coconut oil into your daily diet.

It wont take very long to start seeing the major benefits that coconut oil will have on your health and the way that you look and feel.

The Truth About Coconut Oil....

Jenni Madison - Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Back in the 1930’s tropical oils were being widely used around the world. People were happy and healthy using coconut oil for its many health benefits. For almost 4000 years the news about coconut oil had been all good.

Coconut oil was then one of the leading and most consumed plant based vegetable oils. The American Soy Bean Association then decided to scuttle and destroy its reputation. For economic and political reasons, they set out to take over the market with their own hydrogenated and heavily processed vegetable oils and margarine. Sadly, at the great expense of our health, they succeeded.

In a very clever single swoop approach that tarnished the reputation of the good oils along with the bad - all saturated fats were labeled as bad.

The tests published at this time were done using hydrogenated coconut oils. These studies have no relevance to the non-hydrogenated coconut milk or virgin coconut oil that you eat today.

It is now known that the process of hydrogenation creates trans fatty acids (TFAs). TFAs are toxic in the body and known to impede cell functionality and cause a rise in blood cholesterol. These substances are not present in organic virgin coconut oil.

This scuttle is what has created the widespread misconception that coconut oil is bad for you, raises cholesterol levels and causes heart disease. Coconut oil was clumped in the ‘saturated fat is bad’ category, along side saturated animal fats.

Saturated fats in the form of animal fat do carry foreign cholesterol that tends to ‘clump’ together in the arteries, leading to raised cholesterol levels and heart disease. Coconut oil is a plant based, medium chain saturated fat that does not carry any foreign cholesterol. In fact it is the medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) of coconut oil that makes it so incredibly healthy.

Virgin coconut oil is now being rediscovered as the healthiest and most versatile oil on earth.

What's Miranda Kerr's Health Secret? Coconut Oil!

Jenni Madison - Monday, February 06, 2012

Miranda Kerr's secret to glowing skin and a healthy digestive system  is having 4 teaspoons of coconut oil a day >

While celebrities have been associated with a number of health and diet tips and tricks, supermodel Miranda Kerr's tip seems to be one of the easiest to live by!

The 28-year-old new mum, who is famous for her organic lifestyle, swears by certified organic coconut oil for everything from her healthy glow to her after baby weight loss.

Kerr, who recently launched her new certified organic products for Kora Organics in Sydney and Melbourne, said she includes the healthy oil as part of her daily routine.

"I will not go a day without coconut oil. I personally take four teaspoons per day, either on my salads, in my cooking or in my cups of green tea," she said in a recent interview.

Writing about the benefits of using coconut oil on a daily basis in her Kora Organics blog, Kerr has listed the oil as one of her favorite supplements. She also posts recipes which include the oil on the blog.

"Living a busy life as a working mum I recognise the importance of balancing our wellbeing; from making time for rest and relaxation, taking care of our skin and focusing on a diet that includes healthy, natural foods," she wrote on her blog.

So how does coconut oil work?

Although the oil was once mistakenly found to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, it has been found to be a healthy fat.

The difference in coconut oil compared to other natural oils is the fat molecules called fatty acids. The fatty acids found in coconut oil are more easily absorbed and metabolised by the body than other fatty acids.

Coconut oil does not have a negative effect on cholesterol and helps to protect against heart disease. The oil has also been attributed to giving hair and skin a healthy glow and shine.

Feeding Your Soul

Jenni Madison - Tuesday, January 17, 2012

You can make stable and lasting change in the way you eat through an increased understanding of the effect food has on you. You develop awareness of your own inner sensitivity and begin to observe your food choices without judgement. You recognise and understand the results of your choices. You
begin to pay attention to your own inner messages and how you feel after eating various foods. You become aware of a new world of natural foods - how they look, taste, how to prepare them, their benefits and healing properties.

It is important not to just respond to external messages of what you should do for better health, nor to react unconsciously by eating to meet your emotional needs or to deal with stress. Feeding your soul is about making conscious food choices that make you feel better and honour your soul.

Eating a diet rich in natural plant based phytonutrients, proteins and carbohydrates along with nutrient dense superfoods, has been known to lift your bodies vibration and mental awareness in ways that can help you to make more conscious food choices for the long term.

As you change the way you eat to a healthier more live food nutrient rich lifestyle, you are integrating your mind-body-spirit. Your cravings for various foods will disappear, change or even develop. During this process of changing the way you eat, you may also face challenges as you deal with your self image and the emotions affecting your food choices.

On occasion you may go back to some of your old ways of eating, until you feel ready to address the underlying issues and emotions, and bring in the healing light of natural foods.

Remember this is your own healing journey, take it at your own pace and in your own direction. Learn from all of your experiences and understand why you made your choices so you can transform your life and health by bringing more harmony, peace and balance into your daily choices.

Radiant Health ~ You Are What You Eat and Think!

Jenni Madison - Thursday, December 08, 2011

Radiant Health

Wellness

Wellness

The definition of wellness is a state of being healthy in both body and mind. When we add spirit to the mix we light the flame of inner radiance, the light and power that comes from within.

Radiant health embodies right thinking, conscious eating and energetic flow. There is no separation and therefore radiant health is a state of being and living with optimal energy, health and beauty.

When the mind is light the body is in balance, when the body is in balance energy can flow, from here both wellness and synchronicity happens.

Coconut oil appears to have a unique ability to normalize bodily functions. It works with the cause of imbalances to heal, nourish and repair. It’s health properties help the body return to it’s natural state.

You are What You Eat (and Think)

The food we eat and the thoughts we have, have everything to do with embodying radiant health. Food carries with it its own vibration, and so do our thoughts.

Fresh live organic foods, raw and super foods are rich in minerals, vitamins, fibre and essential fats. They are high in both nutrition and life force. They carry a high vibration that helps the body to reconnect with Mother Nature, and with our natural state of perfect health.

Whole foods and super foods have medicinal qualities that contribute the prevention and healing of disease, and our overall wellbeing.

Health

- The body’s PH Acid/Alkaline balance. Due to the toxicity of our environment and the stress of life many of us have an overload of acidity in the body. We need to alkalise, and eat alkaline rich foods that help us to detoxify and bring this back into balance.

Beauty

– Inner beauty is a state of inner calm, clarity, peace and wellness. There are foods we can eat to help us achieve this state of inner beauty. Foods that are rich in minerals and Mother Nature’s magic have beautifying affects. They beautify from within and also enrich the skin, nails and hair.

Energy

– Thoughts are forces of energy. Right thinking is inspired vision. It is seeing the world and what we experience through the eyes of the soul. With gratitude, faith and a vision for growth. With light energy the body can be strong as it is not struggling or fighting to survive and ‘feel better’.

Consistency is the Key

Making small changes each day and developing habits toward your own wellbeing and health consciousness.

7 Essential Oil and Coconut Oil Blends for Energy, Health & Beauty - written by Jen Gallagher

Jenni Madison - Wednesday, November 23, 2011

I love essential oils—and I love coconut oil! I am known as the Essential Oil Goddess and when the right essential oils are combined with Coconut Magic coconut oil, the outcome is the Goddess of Magic.

Essential oils are potent substances derived from parts of aromatic plants such as the flowers, leaves, fruit, root, bark and wood. They contain concentrated, complex chemical constituents which determine the therapeutic and fragrant properties of the oil. Essential oils are also known as the concentrated “life force” of the plant. Imagine the power of essential oils and coconut oil together as one. I have developed seven amazing recipes for you to start you on your aromatic journey. Enjoy!

Each of the following recipes is suitable for blending in 20mL Coconut Magic coconut oil:

  1. Essential oils for wrinkles. Many essential oils have chemical compounds that support skin health. Choose any  combination of 2-6 drops of essential oils from the following list:

                                               i.     Geranium essential oil

                                             ii.     Patchouli essential oil

                                            iii.     Frankincense essential oil

                                            iv.     Myrrh essential oil

                                              v.     Rosewood essential oil

  1. Uplift and Revive. Blend 2 drops of peppermint essential oil with coconut oil and add to pulse points on the body. This blend can also be used to help cool the body on a hot day (and drink plenty of water!)
  2. Sense and Sensuality. Add some love to your life! Blend 1 drop each of jasmine, geranium and orange essential oil to coconut oil. Run a bath, soak and then lavishly apply the blend from head to toe.
  3. Energy Balance. Take 1 drop each of frankincense, rosewood and spruce essential oil and combine with coconut oil. Apply as needed throughout the day.
  4. Beauty from Within. Combine 2 drops of bergamot, 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of cedarwood with coconut oil to uplift and see the beautiful woman that you are.
  5. Vital You. Add 4 drops of lemon essential oil and 2 drops of spearmint essential oil to your coconut oil to use when you are on the run during the day.
  6. Yum Yum! Next time you are making some healthy coconut oil chocolate, add one drop of food grade (only –do not ingest any other essential oil) peppermint essential oil to your mix. Sooooo healthy and yummy!

This is just a small sample of what is possible with essential oils and coconut oil. This synergy provides amazing results for beauty, energy and radiant health.

Please note: Most citrus essential oils (e.g. lemon, orange) cause the skin more reactive to sunlight. Do not use citrus oils if you plan to go out into the sun. Also, if you are pregnant, have a medical condition or have any concerns, please consult your qualified health professional before using essential oils.
